Resilient Hero

Living your life with a knowledge of your own mystery

"We have not even to risk the adventure alone; for the heroes of all time have gone before us; the labyrinth is thoroughly known. We have only to follow the thread of the hero-path." ~ Joseph Campbell

Kat Tansey

I stumbled into a Mythology course my freshman year in college in 1961, and my life has been a series of Hero's Journeys ever since that fortuitous "mistake."

I'm a change agent, author, and educator, and have been working with individuals and companies for over forty years to help them successfully implement change.

As a Corporate Change Consultant, I've guided over 50 large and small companies through the successful implementation of training programs, computer systems, and organizational restructuring. My work has spanned across most corporate functions and a wide variety of industries.

As a Training and Development Expert, I've created courses and taught thousands of individuals in leadership, sales, problem solving, and team development.

I've held a variety of positions in the corporate world as Director of Global Sales Productivity, Director of Sales Training, Marketing Consultant, Product Manager, Field Consultant, and Project Manager.

I have also been a Partner in an Executive Recruiting Firm, an Executive VP of an Outplacement Firm, and Principle of my own Training and Development Company.

My Journeys

What I learned from each of my Hero's Journeys opened up my thinking and prompted me to go further. This is the magic of the Hero's Journey . . .

I've created this graphic to illustrate how my work over the past eighteen years has led to the development of the Resilient Hero Program.

Mapping My Own Journeys

I've been forging a path for the last eighteen years that has led me here. I knew it was time to create the Resilient Hero.

I was looking at the Hero's Journey Wheel one day, thinking about how many journeys I've been through, creating the books and courses that have led me to this place.

I decide to list them so I could get a better sense of how one journey led to the next. When I did this I saw that I just kept going around the wheel of the Hero's Journey: accepting the call, having the adventure, returning with the Elixir which led me to the next project.

As I drew the rings around the wheel for each journey, I reflected on what qualities and skills it required for me to complete it. I knew it was time to create a new version of Awakening Your Hero's Journey, one that would lead to the new course I've had in my head for several years, Becoming a Resilient Hero.

Awakening Your Hero's Journey

Awakening Your Hero's Journey, an Online Guided Course and E-book, 2019

I began work on the Hero's Journey in 2015 when I came to the realization that I had been writing and teaching about it for all these years, telling stories and creating courses to help people succeed in a variety of Hero's Journeys.

But I had not actually taught them about the Hero's Journey itself.

I saw that this was a bit like the give a man a fish story. I had been giving them a fish instead of teaching them how to fish.

It was time to teach them about the Hero's Journey.

My first step for this new version of Awakening Your Hero's Journey has been to make it a guided online course and connect it to a Learning Center where people can join a group for each stage of the journey and learn from each other's experiences in that stage.

Awakening to Your Hero's Journey is now also part of my new, bigger vision, The Resilient Hero Program. You can learn more about all this under Courses.

Unshakeable Self-Compassion

Unshakable Self-Compassion, an Online Course and E-book, 2014

Each time I write a book or create a course I go through my own Hero's Journey. This one brought me to my knees. It was one thing to teach people how to develop Self-Compassion -- it was quite another at the age of 71 to learn how to do this for myself.

Throughout the course, I kept saying to myself that this one was one hell of a Hero's Journey, and when I saw the people in the course struggling the way I was struggling, I realized they needed to learn about the Hero's Journey before they tried to do this.

This was what I needed to teach them first -- they were stuck without a map and without the support of the 4000 years of heroes who had gone before them -- stuck in the biggest battle of all, to learn how to love themselves just as they were.

These women who were struggling were accomplished, smart women. When I taught them the Self Hug exercise, a very talented, successful woman wrote that she did not feel anything, and I cried when I read this. It was this comment that spurred me to teach the Hero's Journey, to give people the knowledge, the tools, and the map to deal with their worst enemies -- themselves.

And so I began my next journey . . .  to create a way to teach the Hero's Journey.

Choosing to Be Fit

The Art of Taking Small Steps to Transform Your Life, an Online Course, 2012

After several stressful years, I had a bit of a physical breakdown in 2009. I learned about Functional Medicine, which was just getting started at the time, so I decided to develop a course with a functional approach.  Choosing To Be Fit would be my way of teaching myself what to do.

When I created the Alignment Wheel I felt everything falling into place -- a way to see what I needed to work on, as well as see what I was already doing well.

I got well, finished the course and began teaching it. It turned out the Wheel was a perfect way to help people understand that everything is connected, and that you can see what you need to work on and still feel good about yourself.

That jagged line around the circle? It represents Stress. The concentric circles are numbered from 1 to 5, with 5 being at the outside of the circle, where it can protect you from stress. When you are functioning toward the center of the  circles in any area, then Stress has an entry point.

Choosing to Be

Lessons in Living from a Feline Zen Master, Findhorn Press, 2010

Choosing To Be chronicles my own hero's journey to overcome my depression by learning to meditate while recovering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in the early 90's.

A book about CFS and Buddhism with a talking cat was way ahead of its time, so no big publisher would publish it. I went back to work and years later decided to self publish it. Eckhardt Tolle gave me permission to use his quote on the cover.

The book won an IPPY Award, and was picked up by Findhorn Press in 2010. It has been published in Chinese and Dutch, and the Feline Zen Master and his little muse continue to travel the world, helping people learn to meditate.

"I have lived with several Zen Masters -- all of them Cats." ~Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

“I found Choosing to Be one of the better books
    on Zen or sitting practice.”
~Thom Hartmann, #1 progressive radio talk show host in the US and New York Times bestselling author.

“Choosing to Be is a short, original, comfortingly readable introduction to the Buddhist path, a way of living that places the primary responsibility for  our happiness into our own paws, er…hands.”
    ~John Calabrese, Creations Magazine

“Kat Tansey has written an absorbing memoir with the flair of a fiction writer, which draws you effortlessly through her story and makes the learning seem incidental — until you reach the end and realise that the tale of a woman, a cat and a kitten has reminded you there is a better way to live, and how to do it.”
   ~Lucy McCarraher, The Real Secret

Choosing to Be is a rare and wonderful combination of compelling narrative, endearing characters, and accessible, solid meditation instruction, all with a light, humorous touch. Kat Tansey makes it easy to willingly suspend disbelief and learn along wih her from the teachings of her resident feline meditation master. A thoroughly enjoyable and 'enlightening' read!   ~Abby Seixas, Finding the Deep River Within

Finding Magic in MidLife

Grab a cup of your favorite beverage, put your feet up, and join us for intelligent, reflective, and often humorous conversations. Weekly Internet Radio Show, 2008-2013

The Finding Magic in Midlife Radio Show  was produced and archived by Exceptional Wisdom Radio from August 2008 through June 2013, when EWR went off the air.

I decided to create a permanent home at to archive these in-depth interviews with a diverse group of extraordinary midlife women.

These interviews are timeless — spending time with these brilliant, talented, and inspirational women is a rare treat. What I learned during the years we did this show has contributed greatly to the breadth and depth of the perspective I bring to my own work.

Winning The Change Game

How to Implement Information Systems with Fewer Headaches and Bigger Paybacks, Wiley-QAD Publishing, 1988

I formulated a number of implementation principles based on my many years of helping corporations implement organization-wide changes.

The Change Model I developed was adopted not only by systems people in large corporations, but was also incorporated into Arthur Anderson Consulting's methodology to help their clients implement major changes.

I decided to write story about Tom Andrews, a systems manager who learns important principles in order to implement a major change program in his company.

I wanted to make the book fun to read, so I asked a fiction writer friend to bring in a witty Alexander Hamilton as the guru who coaches Tom by constantly transporting him back to 1775 and showing him what they went through to get the Declaration of Independence signed on the fourth of July, 1776.

"An excellent job! We all have a much greater chance of successful implementations if these principles are applied."  ~Mark Christian, Information Systems Manager, IBM

"Having sold so much both externally and internally, I believe that resistance to change is the greatest challenge. This book gives you a strategy that is extremely successful in the higher risk internal sale." ~John Mascarich, Field Development Manager, Hewlett Packard

"There's so much focus on the technical aspect, we lose sight of the human side of implementations. People can strangle implementations. This book gives the MIS reader tools for coping with that." ~ Michael Mushet, Manager, Technology Research, Southern California Edison

Awakening Your Hero's Journey Course

Awakening Your Hero's Journey Course

Finding your path . . .

The purpose of this online guided course is to help you master the Hero's Journey and be able to relate it to your everyday life. To make a shift in your thinking that opens up possibilities you may not be aware of. To know the journey well enough to be able to explain it to other people. To commit to continue learning and using the Hero's Journey in your daily life.

Finding allies on your journey . . .

Finding allies on your journey . . .

Who better to teach you about the Hero's Journey than Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz?

You will follow Dorothy's journey through each stage of the Hero's Journey, learning what Dorothy and Toto and her allies, Scarecrow, Lion, Tinman go through on their Journey. And you will answer questions in your journal to help you go deeper, to begin to relate to Dorothy's journey as you would your own.

You will begin to consider who your allies will be as you do this. Who will be your Scarecrow? And your Tinman? And your Lion?

Learning with your body . . .

Learning with your body . . .

My experience in teaching the Hero's Journey is that our biggest obstacle is usually internal rather than external. I needed to help people learn how to feel and think differently, and I knew from my own Feldenkrais training years ago that this is a very effective way of doing this.

So I asked my friend Marsha Novak, an experienced and creative Feldenkrais teacher, to create some lessons for the Hero's Journey course -- lessons that would provide quite a different and powerful  way of learning

In order to change our mode of action, we must change the image of ourselves that we carry within us.                          ~Moshe Feldenkrais

The Hero's Journey and the Resilient Hero Discussion Centers

The Hero's Journey and the Resilient Hero Discussion Centers

Exploring your path . . .

I've been looking for a way to help the people who take my courses to communicate more easily and effectively with their fellow students, as well as with me.

The Hero's Journey and the Resilient Hero Discussion Centers have been created with this need in mind. In the Hero's Journey Center there is a Private Group for each of the twelve steps of the Hero's Journey. You go to each group when you are taking that lesson so you can share your experiences and learn from others in the course.

Becoming a Resilient Hero Masterclass

Becoming a Resilient Hero Masterclass

Mastering your path . . .

The Resilient Hero Masterclass is designed to help you integrate your understanding of the Hero's Journey with the Resilience Skills that are critical to your mission, whatever that mission may be.

We will cover the ten (or more) most important Resilience Skills in this course. These lessons are what I call Just-In-Time Lessons, because each of you come to the course with some of the skills, so you only need to learn the skills you struggle with.

Just as you did in the Hero's Journey Discussion Center, there is also a Resilience Hero Discussion Center where you can discuss your experiences and learn from other people in the group.
